What is Academic Consideration in Assessment?
Academic consideration is only available to students when life happens and circumstances beyond your control have adversely impacted your performance in or capacity to undertake, prepare for and/or complete an assessment.
When should I apply for Academic Consideration in Assessment?
When unforeseeable circumstances have genuinely impacted your ability to demonstrate learning achievements in assessments. The following unforeseeable circumstances will be considered with supporting documentation:
  • medical condition,
  • bereavement,
  • trauma,
  • extraordinary commitments (military, jury, or emergency service obligations),
  • obligatory religious, faith-based commitments,
  • obligatory cultural commitments of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, and
  • other extenuating circumstances.
What do I need to apply for an Academic Consideration in Assessment?

When applying for Academic Consideration in Assessment certified copies of independent supporting documentation musty be included:
  • Medical documentation which must include the Practitioner's name, date of consultation, student's details; approximate dates of impact of the reported condition on your ability to study);
  • Death certificate or formal letter from a Funeral Director, and evidence of relationship to you the student.
  • A letter from your current employer verifying a change in employment conditions and potential impact on your study,
  • Verifiable notification or correspondence from a relevant government department providing official advice of significant political unrest, civil war or natural disaster, affecting your place of residence, along with evidence of your residency. 
  • Police reports outlining involvement in a serious crime or accident. 
  • Support documentation from a religious leader detailing the faith-based commitment 
Is there a timeframe?
A request for Academic Consideration in Assessment must be lodged within 10 days after the due date or completion date of the assessment concerned where possible.

Assessment Details

For assignments: the date the assignment was due
For exams or classes: the date of the class or exam

Unfortunately, an assessment due on or before this due date is no longer eligible for Academic Consideration in Assessment, as more than 10 working days have passed since the due date.
If you feel your circumstances are extenuating, you may want to consider requesting an Appeal, or lodging a Grievance.
